2019 Selma Jeanne Cohen Dance Lecture
Román Baca, a New Mexico native, is a classically trained ballet dancer and choreographer. In 2001, recognizing his desire to defend the defenseless, he took a hiatus from dance and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a machine-gunner and fire-team leader in Fallujah, Iraq during the Iraq War. This presentation was a part of the 2019 Fulbright Association Annual Conference in Washington, DC

Exit12: Moved by War - The Multi-Award Winning Documentary
"Keep your fingers straight and off the trigger. Do not point the rifle at anyone you do not intend to shoot." That's Roman Baca, a U.S. Marine Iraq War veteran. But he's not speaking to the company of soldiers he led during his tour as a sergeant in Fallujah, Iraq. Here, Baca is instructing a company of ballet dancers. His dance company, Exit 12, helps veterans heal from the trauma of war through the power of dance.
"Exit 12: Moved By War" was directed by Mohammad Gorjestani and produced by Even/Odd Films in collaboration with Square.

Theatre of War at TEDxTuBerlin
Having served in Iraq as a part of the United States Marine Corps, Roman Baca has lived through situations very difficult to process. Much like many war veterans, he struggled to re-adjust to civilian life later on. His way of coping with his experiences is unexpected: As a former professional ballet dancer, he started combining his military experience with dance, developing provocative choreographies and therefore creating a better understanding between those who have experienced war and those who have not. This talk was given at TEDxTuBerlin in 2019.
